Although this market represents only a minor component of our architectural work it is important that Owner/Builders have access to skilled architectural input and design at the outset. The Owner/Builder will in most cases be required to undertake a prescribed Owner/ Builders course for a number of days to achieve a minimum amount of skill required to undertake the role of both Builder and Owner. They will also be responsible for gaining their insurances both for the build and to cover workers on their site. The Fair Trading Department of NSW can be helpful for this information. In most cases after we supply the necessary approvals and documentation this type of customer usually with prior building experience feels confident enough to undertake their project without our ongoing administration services. Although we discourage this approach, we often find that this build methodology has evolved mainly to save monetary outlay on professional fees. In our experience this can often be foolhardy as the builder although competent may lack the full range of skills required dealing with Council, legislation and approval bodies all of who play an important role in the final building outcome. In these situations we extend the offer of ongoing consultation if required to overcome any issues arising from the building works.
